5+ in Drama
This course is ideal for curious, creative students who enjoy exploring ideas and expressing themselves through drama. Whether you are drawn to acting, writing, or the technical and design aspects of theatre, this course will help you develop your skills. A passion for seeing theatre live and understanding how plays and performances work is essential. Commitment outside of lessons for rehearsals, productions, and theatre visits is required.
Drama & Theatre Studies blends practical, creative, and analytical skills. You will:
Create and perform drama in individual and group projects.
Explore technical and design aspects of theatre.
Study plays, playwrights, and theatre practitioners.
Develop critical writing and analytical skills to evaluate live and recorded performances.
The A Level is assessed through a combination of practical and written work:
1. Devising (approx. 40%)
Create a performance or design based on a chosen practitioner’s style.
Produce a supporting portfolio showing creative development.
Internally assessed and externally moderated.
2. Text in Performance (approx. 20%)
Perform a group extract and a solo or duo extract from set texts.
Externally assessed by a visiting examiner.
3. Theatre Makers in Practice (approx. 40%)
Section A: Live Theatre Evaluation – Analyse a live production.
Section B: Page to Stage – Explore how to stage an unseen extract of a studied play.
Section C: Interpreting a Performance Text – Show how your interpretation is influenced by theatre practitioners.
Drama & Theatre Studies develops confidence, communication, and an understanding of human behaviour. It is excellent preparation for higher education in Drama, Theatre Studies, Performing Arts, and related creative subjects. Career opportunities include the arts, media, performance, education, health, leisure, and leadership roles. The skills gained—analysis, creativity, collaboration, and presentation—are valuable across many professional fields.
